The two artifacts being analyzed in this essay are the little mermaid and brave these interesting because they both show different representations of young people.
My first film is the little Mermaid (1989) which tells the story about a young, beautiful teenage mermaid princess (Ariel) who dreams of becoming human and falling in love. In my first clip Ariel is on the beach posing, attracting attention of the prince and looking beautiful. In this clip she is represented to only care about her looks and getting attention of the prince this shows young people around their age to be into there looks and boys more than there education and a life. In my second clip is Ariel going to Ursula asking her for help on how to marry the prince and be with him. She tells Ursula she has fallen in love with the prince but can not be with him because she can not live on land and then asks for help, even thought she has only seen the prince twice yet she insists she loves him which represents her to be into peoples looks as she describes him as “Beautiful” when she firsts see him. In this clip Ursula offers her legs in return for her voice, which turns out to be a trick (To marry the prince instead of Ariel) Ariel however excepts this deal which represents teenagers to be trusting, gullible and inexperienced. In my third clip Ariel has been taken to the palace by the prince to help her and give her clothes when she arrives in her clothes the prince is immediately attracted to her this represents that for teenagers that a slim figure is important as well as nice tight clothes. This whole films main representation of Ariel is that teenagers are all about their looks, figure and boys not more important things like working, education and their health.
My next film is brave (2012) this film tells a very different story about the struggles of a mother and daughter relationship. The princess (Merida) is forced into an arranged marriage but is disgusted by the idea and not being allowed and freedom however her mother has different ideas Merida storms off after arguing and gets a witch to cast a spell on her mother which goes wrong however Merida fixes the problem on her own and stands up to her country and overcomes all the problems with her mother through love. In my first clip it is where three princes competed to marry Merida, Merida then turns up and competes for herself, as she does not want to marry this represents her as being stubborn and strong wielded and that to marry a prince is not what her main focus is in life at the moment showing she doesn’t need a prince to feel good about herself. My second clip is of Merida and her mother in her bedroom preparing for the archery competition of the princes chance to marry Merida, her mother has dresses Merida in a tight corset this again represents that girls need to focus on their looks and marry to be successful and be happy in society. Merida’s dress is very tight and accentuates her figure. My third clip is when Merida has gone to the witch and asked her to ‘change her fate’ which Merida doesn’t realize means changing her mother this represents you make your own fate.
